Shelving for Unlocked Matter and Open Problems (2010) created by NINA BEIER, is a collection of various sculptures which function as bearers of glass shelves and are, for that reason, cut down to a desired height.
The functional decapitations, whereby 90degree angles are imposed on all pieces in this anticollection, suspend the criteria of correspondence and arrangement that govern the discourse of objectivity in the museum. “Shelving” points in the directions of both home design and archives, suggesting the accidental revelation of the incompatible norms that structure the archive, an obscure code, or the act of trespassing into the archivist’s living room.
NINA BEIER is a Danish artist who now lives and works in Berlin. Her work considers the visible and invisible aspects of making and exhibiting art. Recent solo exhibitions include Yerba Buena Center of the Arts, San Francisco, and DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, Praque (2010/2011); Mudam, Luxembourg (2011), and an upcoming solo at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen. She is represented by Laura Bartlett, London, Croy Nielsen, Berlin, and Proyectos Monclova, Mexico City.
