Monica Bonvicini. Light Me Black

Light Me Black. Installation view at Gallery Max Hetzler. Fluorescent lights, metal fixture, steel supporting structure, electric cables, 2 breakers, chains. Approx. 160 x 550 x 140 cm. 2009

MONICA BONVICINI is an Italian artist based in Berlin who likes to explore the experience of space and architecture. Her large-scale installations and sculptures which often use the art institution’s own architecture, question the idea of perception within the exhibition space as well as in art history. She often uses industrial materials like glass, metal, and chains in her works, exploring and redefining their functions. One of the most distinct characteristics of her art is its physical concreteness, and the way it violently addresses and directly influences the observers’ experience of the room.

Light Me Black is inspired by RENZO PIANO‘s reference to the Modern Wing as “a temple of light . . .a building about light and lightness” and consists of an immense sculpture comprising 144 custom-built fixtures fitted with bright white fluorescent tubes. This sculpture is conceptually based on data collected about the artificial illumination in the Modern Wing.

And good news: You can see this installation at the Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin, from this Friday on (April 30, 2010). The opening is part of the Gallery Weekend Berlin

Enjoy!
