During the Autumn 2015, American artist GAYLEN GERBER proposed two consecutive exhibitions with the collective Studio for Propositional Cinema.

One of those exhibition which is presented above, took place in the former studio of Swiss artist DANIEL SPOERRI in Düsseldorf. The space featured three artworks: Support, an oil painting on the ‘Optimal 121’ pipe by JOE COLOMBO; Backdrop, a large piece of grey paper that foregrounded the name of DANIEL SPOERRI that had been painted on the door decades earlier; and Support, a readymade canvas whose surface presents a single hair from the head of serial killer RICHARD TRENTON CHASE.

GAYLEN GERBER is best known for his monochromatic painted surfaces or large sheets of paper that he calls Backdrops and Supports. Basically GERBER invites artists to intervene on his ‘backgrounds’ by layering their artwork over his own. This performative practice addresses a number of questions situated at the intersection of institutional critique, strategies of appropriation and conceptual notions about authorship.
