Sometimes I like to torture myself with drooling over worthwhile shows in places where I am not, like the new solo presentation of multi-disciplinary artist DONNA HUANCA that opened a few days ago at Joe Sheftel location in New York.

Entitled Echo Implant, the exhibition seems to be an immersive installation featuring new paintings and sculptures that will be activated by live models during performances. Most of the time, the models – during these activations – are embedded in the installation as live statues or totems, camouflaged and infused into the sculptural setting as a form of tableau vivant. The piece presented above is called Trimester (2015) and is part of the exhibition.

Born in Chicago, HUANCA received a BFA in Painting from the University of Houston and studied at Städelschule, Frankfurt, Germany. In 2012, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to live and work in Mexico City.

DONNA HUANCA: Echo Implant is on view at Joe Sheftel Gallery in New York till March 8, 2015. Please note also the performance schedule:

  • Sunday, February 15, 3-6pm
  • Sunday, March 1, 3-6pm
  • Sunday, March 8, 3-6pm
