After a few years of her folklore field work, DARIA TUMINAS started to photograph in villages. The crucial thing for her was to address specific individuals and set close relationships with them. She became friends with IVAN (16), ANDREY (14), and their family two years before she shaped the idea of the project Ivan and The Moon.

IVAN and ANDREY – nicknamed Moon –  live in a remote village in Northern Russia. They are not like city teenagers: they have completely different moral values and live in a self-created fairy-tale world in which they go hunting and fishing, can use a joiner’s chisel, and play with ghosts in abandoned places.

The narrative in Ivan and the Moon will be neither chronological nor event related.(…) My aim for this project is to follow the brothers through their life and document things that are impossible to document. In the project I want to experiment with narration system in photography, create unexpected connections and through this work on the border of documentary and art photography challenging both genres. – by DARIA TUMINAS

DARIA TUMINAS was born in 1984 in St.-Petersburg, Russia. She wrote an MA thesis about amateur photography at St.-Petersburg State University in 2010. In 2011 she graduated from Leiden University’s MA programme “Film and Photographic Studies”.
