Mai-Thu Perret

Society is a Hole, 2009, silkscreen, 84.1 x 59.4 cm

Swiss multimedia artist MAI-THU PERRET is increasingly popping up on all the major international art radars: earlier this year she won the fourth annual Zurich Art Prize, which includes a solo show at the Haus Konstruktiv opening in late August. She is participating in ILLUMInations, the exhibition curated by BICE CURIGER for the International Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. And currently PERRET is showing off her art at a major solo exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus entitled The Adding Machine.

Since 1999 MAI-THU PERRET has been writing a story entitled “The Crystal Frontier.” This ongoing story follows a group of women disillusioned with capitalist society and patriarchal convention, who set up an autonomous community in the desert of New Mexico. This text is the basis of a lot of her work: she related the story of these women in the form of fragments of diaries or letters (see above).
