Inujima Art House Project

Following on the Inujima Art Project Seirensho that opened in April 2008, the INUJIMA HOUSE PROJECT is displayed throughout Inujima village, a small island located in the Southeastern part of Okayama prefecture. Art Director YUKO HASEGAWAS and architect KAZUYO SEJIMA (from SANAA) have created a natural-artificial park composed by 4 poetic interpretations of art as space for the senses.

  1. F-Art House: this project is part of the Naoshima Fututake Art Museum Foundation which coordinates art activities throughout the Seto Inland Sea Area.
  2. S-Art House: a solid, broken curve built in transparent acrylic is a homage to the island’s remaining residents, a memor of the inhabitants who succumbed to the temptation to leave.
  3. Nakanotani Gazebo: a metal cupola with a gentle curve. Perforated by tiny holes that let the rain pass through, its surfac reflects passing clouds and the changing colours of the sky
  4. I-Art House: a pavilion with a detached pergola for art exhibitions, wide views and reflections of the local vegetable gardens

Inhabited by approximatively 50 families, the island of Inujima is so small it can be easily be visited on foot in 30 minutes. Instead of creating a single building, KAZUYO SEJIMA transformed the village into a “scattered” museum, renovating and reconstructing ten houses.

A good example of art-architecture which reflects history and future and a kind of utopian search!
