Hovering in a helicopter some 300 to 500 feet above major cities, shooting with a large-format camera that allows him to focus on the structures of his choice, OLIVO BARBIERI is one of today’s most important contemporary Italian photographers. His skill in manipulating scale and focus allows him to achieve a surreal atmosphere – real and mysterious at the same time.

Dolomites Project is one of the international initiatives recently organized to promote the recognition of the Dolomites as a World Heritage site. Using ten large-format photographs and a twelve-minute high-definition video, the artist explores the mountains as architecture, as ever-shifting symbols, and he interprets their skyline as a zigzagging history of the earth. BARBIERI work encourages reflection on the environment and the eco-sustainability of this “planned architecture”.

OLIVO BARBIERI‘s Dolomites Project is part of the photography festival Alt. + 1000 in Rossinière (Switzerland) from 16 July to 19 September 2011
