Bruno Munari

Seeking comfort in an uncomfortable armchair
photo series (around 1950) by BRUNO MUNARI

In this series of eleven black and white photographs we see how BRUNO MUNARI tries to assume a comfortable position to read his newspaper in a reclining chair. An ironic and playful commentary on the polished and impersonal modernistic design of the fifties.

Roughly from the early 30s to the 90s, Italian artist and designer BRUNO MUNARI influenced various fields as painting, industrial and graphic design, film, poetry and pedagogic methods. He described himself as an “inventor artist writer designer architect illustrator player-with-children”. The list is not exhaustive.

BRUNO MUNARI is one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. Not because he has imposed a particular style or look, but because he has encouraged people to go beyond formal conventions and stereotypes by showing them how to widen their perceptual awareness.“- KATE VINGLETON, International Herald Tribune

MUNARI died in Milan in 1998.
