Matthew Stone

MATTHEW STONE is a multi-disciplinary artist, DJ, a formative member of the South London !WOWOW! art collective and shaman living and working in London.

For the photos above, the artist strips his characters of context, observing art’s potential for making and disposing of its own mythology. His stages performances, photographs and films have the aura of secret ancient initiation rites and are all the by-products of his elaborate viral happenings, in which viewers are invited to participate and the divisions between art, play, audience and artist are all melted into one harmonious, communal mesh and based on the idea that whole is worth more than the sum of its parts.

Physical youth itself is immaterial to me. But I’m definitely drawn to the point in people’s lives where they are beginning to define themselves and deciding how they are to live their lives within what seems a very weird world. There is an optimism of youth that I find totally seductive as a romantic idea, but I think its more than just that. It is a place where anything is possible and boundaries are not yet set in stone. Some people seem to have found ways to hold onto those instincts without just withdrawing into themselves. I think humanity needs these dreamers to stay as they are for their entire lives, and to celebrate them. I certainly do.“- by MATTHEW STONE

MATTHEW STONE has contributed to both i-D and Dazed and Confused magazines, and has spoken on two occasions at London’s ICA. He also provides the music for Gareth Pugh’s catwalk shows. And more recently, he also done the music video “Attack music” for These New Puritans.
