Jennifer Rubell

“Creation”, opening of Performa 09 at X-Initiative, New York. 2009

JENNIFER RUBELL started in 2001 to create large-scale food projects, an intriguing mix between art, performance, installation and happening.

Her work deconstructs the meal and ritual, and reshapes it into a series of installations suggesting that people serve themselves, interact and consume the items, transforming RUBELL‘s culinary installations into a performance. Whether it’s shoveling ice into their glasses or smashing chocolate into edible bites, social engagement and performance art fuse, leaving no chance for boredom or for anyone to complain about the seating arrangements – there are no seating arrangements.

It meant a lot to me that the food must be really good. Otherwise, because you’re using food as you’re medium, you’re denying it’s most essential quality. That’d be as if DAN FLAVIN didn’t turn the lights on.”

JENNIFER RUBELL creates an experience where art is as enchanting as it is transitory, and consumption is stripped of its delicacy.
